Familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) is a genetic, adult-onset, neurodegenerative disorder caused by amyloid formation of transthyretin (TTR), a thyroxine-binding protein. Mutation in TTR causes a propensity of TTR tetramer to dissociate to monomer, which is the first step to amyloidosis.
