BACKGROUND: Acquired antibody responses following natural infection provide valuable information for selection of candidate antigens for malaria vaccines. Apical membrane antigen-1 of Plasmodium vivax (PvAMA-1) has potential as a component of a subunit vaccine for vivax malaria.
