The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and CRISPR associated proteins (Cas) comprise a prokaryotic adaptive defense system against foreign nucleic acids. This defense is mediated by Cas proteins, which are guided by sequences flanked by the repeats, called spacers, to target nucleic acids.
