The discovery of the NLRP3 (NLR family, pyrin domain containing 3) inflammasome provided an important molecular mechanism in the induction of the central pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β (IL-1β), via activation of caspase-1, which processes pro-IL-1β into its mature active form.
