Cell-cell interactions play important roles in epithelial tumorigenesis. Here we show in Drosophila imaginal epithelium that Ras activation and mitochondrial dysfunction, frequent alterations in cancers, cause cellular senescence and senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), which leads to overgrowth of neighbouring tissue.
