PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review discusses the unexpected role of red blood cell (RBC) adhesiveness in the pathophysiology of two red cell diseases, hereditary spherocytosis and polycythemia vera, and two 'nonerythroid' disorders, central retinal vein occlusion and Gaucher disease.
