Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML)-derived noncoding control region (NCCR) sequences permitted greater early viral gene expression than kidney-associated NCCR sequences. This was driven in part by binding of the transcription factor Spi-B to unique PML-associated Spi-B binding sites.
