Agmatine is a precursor for polyamine biosynthesis also associated to neurotransmitter, anticonvulsant, antineurotoxic and antidepressant actions in the brain. It results from decarboxylation of l-arginine by arginine decarboxylase and it is hydrolyzed to urea and putrescine by agmatinase.
