The protective immune response against Brucella involves T-cell-mediated immunity. T-lymphocyte receptors, CD28 and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein-4 (CTLA-4), bind the same ligands, CD80 (B7-1) and CD86 (B7-2) on antigen-presenting cells and regulate T cell activation.
