Alpha-synuclein (α-syn) is mainly a presynaptic protein that has been implicated in Parkinson's disease and various other neurodegenerative disorders. Evidence obtained in knockout mice suggests that α-syn controls plasticity of dopamine (DA) overflow in presynaptic terminals.
