CONTEXT: Fetal overexposure to glucocorticoids leads to growth restriction. Optimal fetal glucocorticoid level is ensured by the expression of cortisol-inactivating enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11β-HSD2) in placental syncytiotrophoblasts.
