Genes for the biosynthesis of daunorubicin (daunomycin) and doxorubicin (adriamycin), important antitumor drugs, were cloned from Streptomyces peucetius (the daunorubicin producer) and S. peucetius subsp. caesius (the doxorubicin producer) by use of the actI/tcmIa and actIII polyketide synthase gene probes.
