Streptomyces peucetius, producer of the antitumor anthracycline antibiotic daunorubicin, was mutagenized, and mutants defective in daunorubicin biosynthesis were screened. One mutant (SPVI), which failed to produce daunorubicin, was found to overproduce an extracellular chitinase.
