IDH2 encodes a mitochondrial metabolic enzyme that converts isocitrate to α-ketoglutarate (α-KG) by reducing nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP(+)) to NADPH and participates in the citric acid cycle for energy production.
