The two fundamental types of photoreceptor cells have evolved unique structures to expand the apical membrane to accommodate the phototransduction machinery, exemplified by the cilia-based outer segment of the vertebrate photoreceptor cell and the microvilli-based rhabdomere of the invertebrate photoreceptor.
