BACKGROUND: Neuronal degeneration, in particular in the striatum, and the formation of nuclear and cytoplasmic inclusions are characteristics of Huntington's disease (HD) as a result of the expansion of a polyglutamine tract located close to the N-terminus of huntingtin (htt).
