BACKGROUND: Mutations in key tumor suppressor genes such as tumor protein 53 (TP53) and phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome ten (PTEN) are the main genetic alterations in cancers. TP53 mutations have been found in most patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), whereas PTEN mutations are rarely found in lung cancer, though most NSCLCs lack PTEN protein synthesis.
