We cloned a gene, kexD, that provides a multidrug-resistant phenotype from multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae MGH78578. The deduced amino acid sequence of KexD is similar to that of the inner membrane protein, RND-type multidrug efflux pump.
