The epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM) was originally identified as a tumor associated antigen, attributable to its high expression on rapidly proliferating tumors of epithelial origin. EpCAM plays vital roles in carcinogenesis, tumor progression and metastasis in most tumors.
