Myostatin, a member of the muscle-specific transforming growth factor (TGF)-β family, negatively regulates skeletal muscle growth. It inhibits muscle stem cell proliferation and differentiation and attenuates adult muscle fiber protein accretion, resulting in decreased skeletal muscle mass.
