Hepatic stimulator substance (HSS) protects liver cells from various toxins by alleviating lesions caused in the mitochondria. This paper demonstrates the necessity of the conserved CXXC catalytic motif (C62-C65) for the mitochondria-targeted anti-apoptotic activity of HSS.
