Wild-type strains of Escherichia coli K-12 do not grow anaerobically on trehalose or galactose. We isolated two operon fusion mutants of E. coli which gained the ability to grow on trehalose anaerobically (tan). The tanA-lac mutation was located at 41 min on the E. coli genetic map and also abolished growth on glucuronic acid both aerobically and anaerobically.
