A total of sixteen spontaneously generated, independent suppressor mutants was isolated from a mutant (divE42) of Escherichia coli K12 that is defective in cell division. One of the suppressor mutants, designated TR4, had a novel phenotype: it was able to grow at 42 degrees C but not at 32 degrees C. The Kohara genomic library was screened for complementing clones.
