BACKGROUND: Megalin and cubilin bind and internalize the 25(OH)D3-DBP complex in the kidney. Once the complex is internalized, 25(OH)D3 is released and activated to 1,25(OH)2D3 the ligand for the vitamin D receptor (VDR).
