PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a heterogeneous group of clonal myeloid malignancies. With a few exceptions, response to treatment is unsatisfactory and prognosis is poor. Studies indicate that specific cytogenetic abnormalities, identified by classical G-banding, correlate with prognosis.
