BACKGROUND: Severe malarial anaemia is a major cause of mortality from malaria. Although of enormous relevance, its pathogenesis is largely unknown. Interestingly, the extent of anaemia greatly exceeds the loss of erythrocytes due to direct destruction by the pathogen Plasmodium falciparum.
