PURPOSE: Mucin glycoproteins contribute to lung pathophysiology in asthma. The protein backbone of mucin glycoproteins is encoded by specific MUC genes, which exhibit a high degree of polymorphisms that generate a variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) domains.
