The role of recombination genes in the processing of DNA damaged by methlymethane sulfonate (MMS) was examined in an xth nth nfo strain of Escherichia coli K-12. Introduction of a recQ mutation did not increase the cell's sensitivity to MMS treatment. The presence of recF, recJ or recN mutation slightly increased the cell's sensitivity to MMS treatment.
