Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) are sarcomas arising in the gastrointestinal tract. They are characterised by a gain in function mutation of the KIT oncogene and the majority express the receptor tyrosine kinase KIT, which can be detected by the immunohistochemical stain CD117.
