BACKGROUND: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of enzymes that degrade most macromolecules making up the extracellular matrix. MMPs are involved in not only the gastric mucosal inflammatory response but also the pathogenesis of Helicobacter pylori-associated diseases.
