Proteins exported from Plasmodium falciparum parasites into red blood cells (RBCs) interact with the membrane skeleton and contribute to the pathogenesis of malaria. Specifically, exported proteins increase RBC membrane rigidity, decrease deformability, and increase adhesiveness, culminating in intravascular sequestration of infected RBCs (iRBCs).
