CD34(+) fibrocytes are constitutive elements of the human connective tissue. The stroma associated with invasive carcinomas is characterized by a stereotypic loss of CD34(+) fibrocytes and a phenotype change towards CD34(-) alpha-Smooth muscle actin (SMA)(+) myofibroblasts.
