BACKGROUND: Vitiligo is an autoimmune disorder that occurs with greatly increased frequency in the rare recessive autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy syndrome (APECED) caused by mutations of the autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene on chromosome 21q22.3.
