Pili have been observed on the surface of several gram-positive bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae. The S. pneumoniae strain TIGR4 pilus is composed of three structural subunit proteins encoded in the rlrA pathogenicity islet, RrgA, RrgB, and RrgC.
