Nppa, encoding atrial natriuretic factor, is expressed in fetal atrial and ventricular myocardium and is downregulated in the ventricles after birth. During hypertrophy and heart failure, Nppa expression is reactivated in the ventricles and serves as a highly conserved marker of heart disease.
