Ivermectin (IVM) is the only safe drug for mass-treatment of onchocerciasis. IVM resistance has been reported in gastrointestinal nematode parasites of animals. A reduction in response to IVM in Onchocerca volvulus could have significant consequences for the onchocerciasis control programs.
