Unconventional mRNA splicing by an endoplasmic reticulum stress-inducible endoribonuclease, IRE1, is conserved in all known eukaryotes. It controls the expression of a transcription factor, Hac1p/XBP-1, that regulates gene expression in the unfolded protein response.
