BACKGROUND: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a potentially fatal stem cell cancer that comprises approximately 14% of all leukemias. Although it is estimated that 4,600 people will be diagnosed with CML in the United States in 2007, only 12% of those individuals will die from the disease.
