Aberrant gene methylation plays an important role in human tumorigenesis, including thyroid tumorigenesis. Many tumor suppressor genes are aberrantly methylated in thyroid cancer, and some even in benign thyroid tumors, suggesting a role of this epigenetic event in early thyroid tumorigenesis.
