Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) and enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) both utilize type III secretion systems that translocate the effector protein Tir into the plasma membrane of mammalian cells in order to stimulate localized actin assembly into 'pedestals'.
