BACKGROUND: Scrapie is the transmissible spongiform encephalopathy in sheep. Because genetic variants of the ovine PrP gene (PRNP) can be associated with disease risk, the European Union initiated programs to eradicate high-risk PRNP genotypes from sheep livestock.
