Meningococcal lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is of crucial importance for the pathogenesis of invasive infection. We show that sialylation and elongation of the alpha-chain effectively shields viable unencapsulated Neisseria meningitidis from recognition by human dendritic cells (DC).
