BACKGROUND: Genetic polymorphisms and mutations of the genes involved in tumorigenesis may determine individual susceptibility for cancer. The p27/Kip1 protein belongs to the family of cyclin-dependent kinase-inhibitory proteins, which are negative regulators of cell-cycle progression.
