The spinal cord of early zebrafish embryos contains a small number of neuronal classes whose growth cones all follow stereotyped, cell-specific pathways to their targets. Two classes of spinal neurons make cell-specific turns at or near the ventral midline of the spinal cord, which is occupied by a single row of midline floor plate cells.
