Francisella tularensis causes the zoonotic disease tularemia, and is considered a potential bioterrorist agent due to its extremely low infection dose and potential for airborne transmission. Presently, F. tularensis is divided into four subspecies; tularensis, holarctica, mediasiatica and novicida.
