Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors have been proven to inhibit mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) polymerase gamma, resulting in decreased mtDNA synthesis and consequential risk for the development of mitochondrial dysfunction in HIV-infected individuals.
