Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) forms histological lesions termed attaching and effacing lesions (A/E lesions) on infected large intestine tissue. The major virulence factors involved in A/E lesions reside on a locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE), a pathogenicity island.
