SUMO, or Smt3 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is a ubiquitin-like protein that is post-translationally attached to multiple proteins in vivo. Many of these substrate modifications are cell cycle-regulated, and SUMO conjugation is essential for viability in most eukaryotes.
