Hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) represents 1-3% of all colorectal cancers. HNPCC is caused by a constitutional defect in a mismatch repair (MMR) gene, most commonly affecting the genes MLH1, MSH2 and MSH6.
