KIT expression is a key diagnostic feature of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), and virtually all of the GISTs express oncogenic forms of the KIT or PDGFRA receptor tyrosine kinase proteins, which serve as therapeutic targets of imatinib mesylate (Gleevec; Novartis, Basel, Switzerland).
